Joseph Connors studied at Boston College and Cambridge University before receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1978. He taught in the department of art history and archaeology at Columbia University from 1980-2002, with a leave to serve as Director of the American Academy in Rome from 1988-92. He became Director of Villa I Tatti, the Harvard Center for the Study of the Italian Renaissance in Florence, in 2002. From an initial study of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Rome he has deepened and extended our knowledge of the architecture and urban development of Baroque Rome, in particular the way in which elites and institutions express power relationships through changes in the urban fabric. He received the Richard Krautheimer Medal in 1984 and the Premio Letterario Rebecchini (with Louise Rice) in 1991. He is the author of one book on Frank Lloyd Wright and several on Roman baroque architecture: Borromini and the Roman Oratory: Style and Society, 1980; Specchio di Roma barocca (with Louise Rice), 1991; Francesco Borromini: Opus Architectonicum, 1998; and Alleanze e inimicizie: L'urbanistica di Roma barocca, 2005. A major monograph on the architecture of Francesco Borromini (1599-1667) is in preparation. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2003.

Marjorie Garber is an internationally renowned scholar of Shakespeare, Renaissance literature and contemporary culture. Her interests encompass literary and cultural theory, psychoanalysis, gender, sexuality, the arts, and intellectual life. Her books include Shakespeare’s Ghost Writers (1987); Vested Interests: Cross-Dressing and Cultural Anxiety (1992);Vice-Versa: Bisexuality and the Eroticism of Everyday Life (1995); Dog Love (1997); Sex and Real Estate (2000); Academic Instincts (2001); Shakespeare After All (2004); Patronizing the Arts (2008);Shakespeare and Modern Culture (2008) and The Use and Abuse of Literature (2011); as well as several volumes of collected essays: Symptoms of Culture (1998); Quotation Marks (2002); Profiling Shakespeare (2008); Loaded Words (2012); and Character: The History of a Cultural Obsession (2020). Shakespeare After All was awarded the prestigious Christian Gauss Prize by the Phi Beta Kappa Society in 2005. Her essays, known for their incisive wit, have established her as an astute cultural critic and commentator on modern life. Her dynamic and compelling lectures on Shakespeare have been widely influential for generations of students and scholars. Her recent work has addressed the arts, theater and performance, the centrality of literature and the future of the humanities. Dr. Garber is the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of English and Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. She received her B.A. from Swarthmore College (with Highest Honors) in 1966, and her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1969. She taught at Yale for a decade and then at Haverford College before joining the Harvard faculty in 1981. At Harvard she has been Director of the Humanities Center, Chair of the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies, Director of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Chair of the Committee on Dramatic Arts, and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Garber is the former President of the international Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes and a continuing member of its advisory board, and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Council of Learned Societies. She is a Trustee of the English Institute, and a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar.

Professor Hamburger's teaching and research focus on the art of the High and later Middle Ages. Among his areas of special interest are medieval manuscript illumination, text-image issues, the history of attitudes towards imagery and visual experience, and German vernacular religious writing of the Middle Ages, especially in the context of mysticism. Beginning with his dissertation on the Rothschild Canticles (Yale, 1987), much of his scholarship has focused on the art of female monasticism, a program of research that culminated in 2005 in an international exhibition, Krone und Schleier (Crown and Veil) that was sponsored by the German government and held jointly in Bonn and Essen. An English translation of the essays in the exhibition catalog was published by Columbia University Press in 2008. His current research includes a project that seeks to integrate digital technology into the study and presentation of liturgical manuscripts, a study of narrative imagery in late medieval German prayer books and a major international exhibition on German manuscript illumination in the age of Gutenberg. The recipient of numerous awards, including fellowships from the John S. Guggenheim Foundation, the American Philosophical Society, the NEH, and the Humboldt-Stiftung, Prof. Hamburger was elected a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America in 2001 and a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2009. He serves on numerous advisory boards, among them, those of the German Manuscript Cataloguing Centers, the Europäisches Romanikzentrum, the Centre International de Codicologie, Bibliothèque Royale Albert Ier, Brussels, and the Katalog der deutschsprachigen illustrierten Handschriften des Mittelalters, Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Munich. He is currently Chair of Harvard's Medieval Studies Committee. Prof. Hamburger holds both his B.A. and Ph.D. in art history from Yale University . He previously held teaching positions at Oberlin College and the University of Toronto. He has been a guest professor in Zurich, Paris, Oxford and Fribourg, Switzerland. In 2015 he was awarded the Anneliese Maier Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Foundation.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised there and in Vienna, Joseph Leo Koerner studied at Yale University (B.A. 1980), Cambridge University (M.A. 1982), University of Heidelberg (1982-3), and University of California at Berkeley (M.A. 1985, Ph.D. 1988). After three years at the Society of Fellows, Harvard University (1986-9), he joined the Harvard faculty, where he was Professor of History of Art and Architecture until 1999. 1999-2000 he was Professor of Modern Art History at the University of Frankfurt; in 2000 he moved to London, where he was Professor first at University College London (until 2004), then at the Courtauld Institute of Art (until 2007). Koerner organized teaching exhibitions at Harvard on Early Netherlandish Painting (1990), German Renaissance Art (1993), Pieter Bruegel (1995) and Netherlandish prints 1550-1675 (1999). At the Austrian National Gallery in 1997, he curated a retrospective of the work of his father, the painter Henry Koerner. In 2002, he collaborated with Bruno Latour and others on the exhibition Iconoclash: Beyond the Image Wars at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. His books include Die Suche nach dem Labyrinth--Der Mythos von Daedalus und Ikarus (1983), Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape (1990), The Moment of Self-Portraiture in German Renaissance Art (1993), and The Reformation of the Image (2004). Koerner wrote and presented the three-part series Northern Renaissance for BBC Television. He also wrote and presented the BBC feature-length documentary Vienna: City of Dreams. Koerner was awarded the Jan Mitchell Prize for the History of Art in 1992. He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1995. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2008. In 2009 he was award a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation. He is a Senior Fellow at Harvard's Society of Fellows.

Lewis Lockwood is an American music historian. He has worked primarily in two fields: music and culture in Italy from c. 1400 to 1600; and the intensive study of Beethoven’s life and music. Lockwood was born in New York City in 1930 (by chance on Beethoven’s birthday), was trained as a cellist and continues to be active in chamber music. After attending the High School of Music and Art, then Queens College, he did his graduate studies at Princeton University with Oliver Strunk and others (Ph.D 1960). He taught at Princeton from 1958 to 1980, then moved to Harvard University, remaining there until his retirement in 2002. In 2010 he accepted appointment as Distinguished Senior Scholar in Musicology at Boston University. Having been swept into Renaissance studies in his undergraduate years by Edward Lowinsky, his first area of scholarship was Italian music history of the 15th and 16th centuries. His dissertation on the north Italian 16th-century composer Vincenzo Ruffo showed the influence of church patronage on style in sacred music. His later work included numerous articles on sacred and secular music, culminating in his major book, Music in Renaissance Ferrara, 1400-1505 (1984, rev. 2009) This book was the first fully documented study of the rise of this important musical center, and received the Howard Marraro Prize of the Society of Italian Historians in 1985. In 2008 Lockwood received the Paul Oskar Kristeller Award from the Renaissance Society of America, and he holds honorary degrees from the Universita degli Studi di Ferrara, New England Conservatory, and Wake Forest University. In 2019 he shared the Guido Adler Prize of the International Music Association with fellow APS member Margaret Bent, in honor of "scholars who have made an outstanding contribution to musicology." In the 1960's he turned towards the study of Beethoven, with a special focus on the vast patrimony of Beethoven’s surviving sketches and autograph manuscripts as evidence of his compositional process. Still only very partially known and published, these sources offer unparalleled insight into Beethoven’s methods of composition over his entire lifetime. Lockwood’s essay on the composing score of the cello sonata Op. 69 appeared in The Music Forum, 1970 and later in his Beethoven: Studies in the Creative Process (1992). In 2003 he brought out his Beethoven: The Music and the Life (New York: Norton). which has been translated into six language and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in biography. This book gives primacy to Beethoven as composer while it also deals with the most salient issues in his life and career. In 2008, in collaboration with the members of the Juilliard String Quartet, he co-authored the book, Inside Beethoven’s Quartets. Most recently he has co-edited, with Alan Gosman, the critical edition of Beethoven’s "Eroica" Sketchbook (2013). He was the founding editor of Beethoven Forum, (1992-2007), the first serial scholarly publication on Beethoven produced in America. Lockwood was named by Joseph Kerman in the New York Review of Books as "a leading musical scholar of the postwar generation and the leading American scholar on Beethoven." Lewis Lockwood was elected a members of the American Philosophical Society in 2013.

Gülrü Necipoglu has been Aga Khan Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at Harvard University since 1993. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard in 1986. Professor Necipoglu is the author of Architecture, Ceremonial and Power: The Topkapi Palace (1991); The Topkapi Scroll, Geometry and Ornament in Islamic Architecture (1995); and The Age of Sinan: Architectural Culture in the Ottoman Empire (2005). She is also the editor of Muqarnas: An Annual on Islamic Art and Architecture and Supplements to Muqarnas. Her Topkapi Scroll won the Albert Hourani Book Award and the Spiro Kostoff Book Award. The Age of Sinan has been awarded the Fuat Koprulu Book Prize. She is a member of the American Philosophical Society and the International Palladio Center for the Study of Architecture in Vicenza.

Kay Kaufman Shelemay is the G. Gordon Watts Professor of Music and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. An ethnomusicologist who received her Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Michigan (1977), Shelemay has carried out ethnographic and historical research in Ethiopia and among a cross-section of musical communities in the United States. Shelemay’s first book, Music, Ritual, and Falasha History (1986), won both the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award in 1987 and the Prize of the International Musicological Society in 1988. Among her other books are A Song of Longing: An Ethiopian Journey (1991); Ethiopian Christian Chant: An Anthology (3 vols., 1993-97), co-authored with Peter Jeffery; Let Jasmine Rain Down: Song and Remembrance Among Syrian Jews (1998); Sing and Sing On. Sentinel Musicians and the Making of the Ethiopian American Diaspora (2022) and the textbook Soundscapes: Exploring Music in a Changing World (3rd ed., 2015). Shelemay has also edited a seven-volume series of readings in ethnomusicology and other collections of essays, including Pain and Its Transformations: The Interface of Biology and Culture (2007, co-edited with Sarah Coakley) and Creating the Ethiopian Diaspora, a special double volume of Diaspora, A Journal of Transnational Studies (2011, co-edited with Steven Kaplan). Among her numerous articles, "The Power of Silent Voices. Women in the Syrian Jewish Musical Tradition" won the Society of Ethnomusicology’s 2010 Jaap Kunst for best article of the year. Shelemay has been awarded fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies. A Past-President of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Shelemay was a Congressional appointee to the Board of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress from 1999-2012. In 2000, she was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2004, a fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research. Shelemay was named the Chair for Modern Culture at the John W. Kluge Center of the Library of Congress during 2007-2008, and served as the Phi Beta Kappa/Frank M. Updike Memorial Scholar during 2010-2011. Kay Kaufman Shelemay was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2013.

Born in New York City, Irene Winter received her AB in Anthropology from Barnard College (1960), her MA in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of Chicago (1967), and her PhD from Columbia University in the History of Art and Archaeology (1973). She taught at Queens College, CUNY, from 1971-1976, at the University of Pennsylvania from 1976-1988, and is presently Boardman Professor of Fine Arts Emerita at Harvard University, having served on the faculty from 1988 to 2009, and as Department Chair from 1993-1996. In 1996-97 she was Slade Professor at Cambridge University, delivering the Slade Lectures in the Spring of 1997. She subsequently delivered the Flexner Lectures at Bryn Mawr College in 1999, and in the Spring of 2005 presented the Andrew H. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Professor Winter has participated in archaeological excavations at Godin Tepe and Hasanlu, Iran, and at Tell Sakhariyeh, Iraq, with additional comparative fieldwork in India. Her awards include a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship (1983-88), along with an Olivia James travel Grant of the Archaeological Institute of America, and a Samuel H. Kress Foundation Fellowship. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1999, was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study in 2003-04, was named a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, in 2005, received the Medal of Distinction from Barnard College in 2009, and was designated an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, in 2013. She has served on the Board of the College Art Association, several editorial and grants boards, and the Scientific Committee of the International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East since its inception in 1988. She has also been a member of the Iraq Task Force of the Archaeological Institute of America. Her principal work has been devoted to the art and archaeology of the Ancient Near East, writing on topics ranging from ivory carving and cylinder seals to royal sculpture. Throughout her career, her stress has been on the relationship between the visual arts, language, history and culture in an attempt to join empirical data with theory in an inter-disciplinary context. Two volumes of collected essays, published by Brill, appeared in 2010, entitled On Art in the Ancient Near East. The Mellon lectures will be published as Visual Affect: Aesthetic Experience and Ancient Mesopotamia.

Christoph Wolff received a Dr.Phil. at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, Erlangen, in 1966, where he was an instructor at the Institute for Sacred Music (1963-65) and a lecturer in the Department of Music (1965-69). Later he served as an assistant professor of music at the University of Toronto and as professor of music at Columbia University before moving to Harvard University in 1976. He is currently the Adams University Professor at Harvard. Christoph Wolff is one of the foremost musicologists of our time, and without peer as a scholar of Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition to his work as editor and archivist, in 2000 he published a widely-praised biography of Bach aimed at a general audience, now in its fourth printing and translated into eight languages. His amazing discovery in 1999 of a trove of Bach family manuscripts in Kiev drew international attention. He has served widely on professional bodies and has also been a successful academic administrator at Harvard, where for eight years he was Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. His list of books include The Bach Family (principal author, 1983); Bach: Essays on His Life and Music (1991); Mozarts Requiem: Historical and Analytical Studies-Documents-Score (1994); and Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician (2000). Dr. Wolff is the recipient of the Dent Medal of the Royal Musical Association, London (1978) and an Honorary Professor of the University of Freiburg since 1990. He currently serves on the board of directors of the the Packard Humanities Institute and chairs the executive board of the Bach Archive in Leipzig, Germany. Dr. Wolff is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the Saxon Academy of Sciences at Leipzig. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2002.
